3、ort.Whensomeoneissayingsomethingwithwhichheagrees,theaverageEuropeanwillsmileandnodapproval.Ontheotherhand,ifyoudisagreewithwhattheyaresaying,youmayfrownandshakeyourhead.Inthiswayyousignalyourreactions,andcommunicatethemtothespeakerwithoutsayingaword.Ireferredamomentagoto“theaverageEuro
4、pean”,becausebodylanguageisverymuchtiedtoculture,andinordernottomisunderstand,ornottobemisunderstood,youmustrealizethis.AsmilingChinese,forinstance,maynotbeapprovingbutsomewhatembarrassed.QuitealotofworkisnowbeingdoneonthesubjectofNVC,whichisobviouslyimportant,forinstance,tomanagers,who
5、havetodealeverydaywiththeirstaff,andhavetounderstandwhatotherpeoplearefeelingiftheyaretocreategoodworkingconditions.Bodylanguage,orNVCsignals,aresometimescategorisedintofivekinds:1.bodyandfacialgestures;2.eyecontract;3.Bodycontractor“proximity”;4.clothingandphysicalappearance;and5.thequ
6、alityofspeech.Iexpectyouunderstoodallthose,exceptperhaps"proximity."Thissimplymeans"closeness".Insomecultures-andIamsurethisisaculturalfeatureandnotanindividualone-itisquitenormalforpeopletostandclosetogether,ortomoreorlessthrusttheirfaceintoyourswhentheyaretalkingtoyou.Inothercultures,
7、thisisdisliked;Americans,forinstance,talkaboutinvasionoftheirspace.Somesignalsareprobablycommontoallofus.Ifapublicspeaker(likeaprofessor,forexample)isallthetimefiddlingwithapencil,orwithhisglasses,whileheistalkingtoyou,heistellingyouquiteclearlythatheisnervous.Apersonwhoholdsah
