3、avirus.Thesheddingpatternsfromfiveoftheseanimalswerefollowedforaperiodof12weeks,andallwerefoundtobechronicallysheddingvirus.Despitethepresenceofbothfaecalandserumantibodytheinfectionwasnotcleared;therefore,theroleofcell-mediatedimmunity(CMI)wasinvestigatedbyimmunosuppressing
4、thechronicallysheddingcowswithdexametha-sone.NomajorroleforCMIinmaintainingthechronicinfectioncouldbedetermined,althoughimmunosuppressiondidresultinatemporaryreductioninthesheddingofvirus-specificimmunecomplexes.INTRODUCTIONCoronavirusesareassociatedwithawidevarietyofdisease
5、sinbothhumansandanimals(Tyrrelletal.,1978)andmanymembersofthecoronavirusfamilyappeartobecapableofestablishingchronicinfectionsintheirhosts.Theseinfectionsincludechroniccentralnervoussystemdiseaseinmice(Baileyetal.,1949)andpigs(Mengeling&Cutlip,1976),chronicnephritisinchicken
6、s(Alexanderetal.,1978)andchronicdiseaseoftheeyeinrats(Laietal.,1976).Thedetectionofcoronavirusesassociatedwithenteritisforseveralmonthsafterinfectionhasalsobeenreportedinbothhumans(Mooreetal.,1977)andpigs(Underdahletal.,1975).Bovineentericcoronavirus(BEC)hasbeenshowntobeapri
7、marypathogeninneonatalcalfdiarrhoea(Mebusetal.,1973).TheincidenceofBEC-associatedenteritisinnaturallyoccurringoutbreaksofdiarrhoeainyoungcalveshasbeenreportedtovaryfrom15to70%(Crouchetal.,1984;Langpapetal.,1979;Marsolaisetal.,1978;Morinetal.,1976)andserologicalevidenceindica
