3、ncontrast,allofthemorethan20coronavirusstrainssofarpositivelyisolatedfrommanareinassociationwithmildupperrespiratorytractinfections.Since1975,anumberofreportshaveidentifiedcoronavirus-likeparticles(CVLPs)infaecalspecimensfromadultsandchildrensufferingfromgastro-enteritis
4、andalsofromhealthysubjects:thesehavebeensummarizedpreviously(21,29,40).Similarparticleshavebeenfoundinfaecalsamplesfromanumberofanimals.Inallthesestudies,thepresenceofCVLPswasnotclearlyassociatedwithdiseaseandtheparticleswerecharacterizedascoronavirus-likeentirelyontheir
5、morphology,particularlythepossessionofsurfaceprojectionsapproximately20nmlong.Theparticleswerepleomorphicandusuallymuchlargerthancorona-virusesgrownincellculture.AlthoughmanyattemptshavebeenmadetogrowhumanCVLPsinorganandtissuecultures,allattemptshavefailedwiththeex-cepti
6、onoftwolaboratorieswhichhavereportedtheirgrowtheitherinorgancultures(ll,12)orintissuecultures(35,61),butboththesereportsrequirecon-firmation.Inthisreview,wedescribetheidentificationandclassificationofCVLPsfromfaecalmaterial.Acomparisonismadebetweentheseparticlesandwell-r
