3、eobservedinthecisternaeoftheendoplasmicreticulumbyelectronmicroscopy.Giantcellswereobservedbylightandscanningelectronmicroscopy,andlargemultinucleatecellswereseenbythin-sectionelectronmicroscopy,suggestingthatHCV229Ecaninducesyncytialformationinculturedhumanmacrophages.Furthermore,thepro
4、-ductionofinfectiousvirusbymacrophageswasdemonstratedbyaninfectiouscentreassay.INTRODUCTIONThecellsofthereticuloendothelialsystemplayakeyroleindeterminingsusceptibilitytovirusinfections(Mires,1964;Silverstein,1970;Morgensen,1979).Studieswithanumberofdifferentviruseshaveshownacorrelationb
5、etweenthegrowthofvirusinmacrophagesandthesusceptibilityofthehosttoinfection(Bang&Warwick,1960;Roberts,1963,1964;Tosolini&Mires,1971;Virelizier&Allison,1976).Coronavirusinfectionsoftherespiratorytractarewidespreadinthehumanpopulationandaccountforasignificantproportionofcolds(McIntosh,1974
6、;Monto,1974).However,therearefewdataavailableconcerningtheinteractionsbetweenhumanrespiratorycoronavirusesandmacrophages.Inviewoftheimportanceofmacrophagesinvirusimmunity,theinteractionsbetweenthehumanrespira-torycoronavirusesstrain229E(HCV229E)andhumanmacrophageshavebeeninvestigated.The
