4、ryemphasisonthepathogenesisofthesevirusesinnature.Althoughthemechanism(s)wherebyFIPVcausesdiseasearestillincompletelyunderstood,therehavebeensignificantcontributionstotheliteratureoverthepastdecadewhichprovideaframeworkuponwhichplausibleexplanationscanbepostulat
5、ed.TwoconceptsarepresentedwhichattempttoclarifythepathogenesisofFIPVandatthesametimemayserveasanimpetusforfurtherresearch.Thefirstinvolvesthehypothesis,originallypromulgatedbyPedersenin1981,thatFIPVisderivedfromFECVduringvirusreplicationinthegastrointestinaltrac
6、t.Thesecondinvolvesauniquemechanismofthemucosalimmunesystemreferredtoasoraltolerance,whichundernormalconditionspromotestheproductionofsecretoryimmunityandsup-pressestheproductionofsystemicimmunity.InthecaseofFIPVinfection,weproposethatoraltoleranceisimportantint
7、hecontrolofthevirusatthegastrointestinaltractlevel.Onceoraltoleranceisdisrupted,FIPViscapableofsystemicspreadresultinginimmune-mediatedvasculitisanddeath.Thus,itmaybethatclinicalformsofFIPareduetoacombinationoftwoevents,thefirstbeingthegenerationofFIPVfromFECV,a
