3、esizesofthethreecoronaviruses.Further-more,threetypesofsurfaceprojectionofthesamelengths,butvaryingwidthsandmorphology,wereobserved.BothIBVCormandHCV229Ehadbulbousprojec-tionscharacteristicofcoronaviruses,althoughtheprojectionsofHCV229EweresomewhatthinnerthanthoseofI
4、BVConn.Ontheotherhand,MHV3particleshadthin,cone-shapedsurfaceprojections,thatwerecompletelyunliketypicalcoronavirusprojections.Thesignificanceoftheseresultsisdiscussed.IntroductionCoronavirusesareagroupoflipid-contMningRNAvirusesthathaveauniquemorphology(15,22).Thevi
5、rionsareusuallydescribedasbeinglargepleomorphicsphericalparticleswithcharacteristicbulbous,wideLy-spacedsurfaceprojectionsthatformacoronaaroundtheparticles(15).Thevirusenvelopecontainslipidandappeaxstoconsistofadistinctpairofelectrondenseshells(15)andasingle-stranded
6、helicalinternalcomponentthathasbeenidentifiedasribonueleoprotein(10).Atpresent,coronavirusesareclassifiedalmostentirelybymeansoftheircharacteristicmorphology,andalthoughpreliminarybiochemicalandserologicalcriteriaarenowavailableforsomecoronaviruses(22),therelativedif
7、ficultyinisolatingandgrowingsomeofthesevirusesincellcultureforbiochemicalanalysismeansthatforsometimeitwiltbenecessarytoclassifymanycoronavirusesentirelybytheirmorphologicalfeatures.Measurementsofthesizesoivariouscoronavirusspeciesbydifferentin-vestigatorsusingnegati
