3、SDE)developsthatischaracterizedbyparalysis(2).Histologically,themainlesionconsistsofaprimarydemyelinationassociatedwithperivascularcuffingsandacellularinfiltrationofmacrophagesaswellashelperandcytotoxicTlymphocytesjem.rupress.org(1,2).SDEanimalsrevealacell-mediatedimmune(CMI
4、)responsetomyelinbasicprotein(MBP)asdocumentedinadoptivetransferexperiments(1).Inaddition,geneticexperimentsdemonstratethatBrown-Norway(BN)ratsareresistanttoSDE,similartowhathasbeenobservedinEAE(4).Thesefindingsindicateanimmunopathologicalreactionincoronavirus-inducedSDEinLe
5、wisratsthatislackinginBNrats.onMarch17,2015ACMIresponseisgeneticallycontrolledatatleasttwolevels:(a)theabilityoftheanimaltogenerateanencephalolytogenicTcellresponsetoantigenwithinthebrain(foreignorautoantigen)fromitsgeneticallydeterminedTcellreper-toireand(b)thedegreetowhich
6、theantigenispresentedtotheseTcellsinthecontextofclassIandII(Ia)histocompatibilitymoleculeswithinaparticulartissue.ClassII-restrictedTcellsinitiateanimmuneresponsetoinfectionandbothclassI-andII-restrictedTcellsprovidecytolysisofinfectedcells(5).Sincelamoleculesarenormallylack
7、ingoncellsofthebrain(6),theinductionoflawithinthebrainiscrucialfortheinitiallocalpresentationofviralantigenduringinfection.ItmaythereforebeimportantthatastrocytesofLewisratbraincanbeinducedtoexpressladirectlybyJHMvirus(7,8)aswellasbyotherviruses.IFN-ysubsequentlyreleasedbyan
