3、dcellsreleasedinfectiousvirus.Theextentofbothvirusproductionandcelldestructionwashighlydependentuponthevirusinput.Atlowinput,cellviabilitywasaffectedonlyslightly,andadelayedandpersistentvirusproductioncouldbeobserved.TGEVinfectionofmacrophagesalsoledtoamarkedsynthesisoftypeIinterferon.Thus,thepossib
4、ilitythatalveolarmacrophagesactasanextra-intestinaltargetforTGEVmustbeconsidered.INTRODUCTIONCellsofthemononuclearphagocytesystemoftenplayakeyroleindeterminingsusceptibilitytovirusinfection(Mogensen,1979;Morahan&Morse,1979).Oneofthebestdefinedsystemsforthesestudiesemploysthecoronavirusmousehepatitis
5、viruswhereapositivecorrelationbetweengrowthofvirusinmacrophagesandsusceptibilityofthehosttotheinfectionhasbeenestablished(forreferences,seeVirelizier,1981).Incontrast,onlylimiteddataareavailableconcerningthebiologicaleffectsofothermembersofthecoronaviridaeonmacrophage-likecells(Pedersen,1976;Patters
6、on&Macnaughton,1982).Theinteractionoftransmissiblegastroenteritisvirus(TGEV),aporcinecoronavirus,withitsnaturalhosthasbeenstudiedingreatdetailandservesasamodelforthepathogenesisofentericvirusinfections.Themaintargetsofthevirusaretheabsorptiveepithelialceilscoveringthesmallintestinalvilli(Pensaerteta
