3、emainedelusive.TheinitialconceptofanenteromammaryimmunologicaxisinmonogastricsoriginatedfromstudiesoflactogenicimmunitytoTGEVinswine.ThesestudiesrevealedthatinfectionofpregnantswinewithvirulentTGEVstimulatedhighti-tersofSIgAantibodiesinmilkwhichcorrelatedwi
4、thprotectionofsucklingpigsagainstTGE;parenteralororalinoculationwithliveattenuatedorkilledTGEVvaccinesinducedmainlyIgGantibodiesinmilkwhichgenerallyprovidedpoorprotectiontosucklingpigs.TherecentappearanceofPRCVinfectionsinswineandcontinuingstudiesofTGEVin-f
5、ections,presentauniquemodelforfurtherstudiesofmucosalimmunity.Researchusingtheseviruseshasincreasedourunderstandingofthevariouscomponentsofthecommonmucosalimmunesystemandtheirinteractions.Althoughthemostimportantconsidera-tionindesigninganeffectivevaccinefo
6、rTGEVisthestimulationofGALTthroughintes-tinalvirusreplication,studiesaddressingthecontributionofBALTtoimmunitytoTGEVandPRCVmayprovideinsightsforalternativevaccineapproaches.ThemechanismbywhichexposuretoPRCVelicitsavariabledegreeofimmunitytoTGEVchallengeisun
7、-known.Virusreplicationinthegutorrespiratorytractisamajorfactoraffectingthemag-nitudeoftheimmuneresponseattherespectivesiteandmaybenecessaryfortherecruit-mentofspecificimmunecellsfromothermucosalinductivesites,i.e.,GALTtoBALTandBALTtoGALTmigration.Furtherst
