4、fthejejunumandileum,Peyer’spatchesandmesentericlymphnodes.Inviewofthesmallnumbersofinfectedcellsinthetonsils,spleen,kidney,liverandlung,thesetissuesarenotconsideredtobepreferentialmultiplicationsites.TheattenuatedNouzillystrainmultipliesonlyintheileumandthemesentericlymphnodes.Thevariationinthe
5、tropismforparticularpartsoftheintestine(withthepreferentiallocalizationofthevirusintheileumratherthanthejejunum),couldberelatedtothehighdegreeofattenuationoftheNouzillystrain.IntroductionTransmissiblegastroenteritis(TGE)isahighlycontagious,entericdiseaseofswinecharacterizedbyvomiting,severediar
6、rhoeaandahighmortalityrateamongpigletsunder2weeksofage.TGEisoneofthemostdevastatingdiseasesinnew-bornpigsbecauseofhighmortality,thelackofresponsetotreatmentandthelimitedefficiencyofavailablevaccines(Bohl,Gupta,OlquinandSaif,1972;Bohl,1989;MoxleyandOlson,1989).DetectionofTGEviralantigenswithinth
7、einfectedenterocytesfromthesmallintestineisprobablythesimplest,themostrapidandthemostreliablemethodfordiagnosingTGEinpiglets.Thebestresultsareobtainedfrompigletskilledataveryearlystageofdisease,sincetheinfectedcellsarerapidlyshedf
