2、noculatedwithareovirus(ReoV)andcoronavirus(SARS-CoV)isolatedfromSARSpa-tientstodeterminetheirpotentialroleintheetiologyofSARS.AnimalsinfectedwithReoVdiedbetweenday22andday30postinoculation(PI)while70%oftheanimalsinoculatedwithReoVandSARS-CoVdiedbe-tweenday4today7PI.
3、ThetiterofneutralizingantibodiesagainstReoVandSARS-CoVrangedfrom80to160whentheanimalswereinoculatedwiththetwoviruses,respectively,whilethetiteroftheantibodieswasjustbelow10incoinfections.TheanimalinoculatedwithReoVdevelopeddiffusealveolardamagesimilartotheexudativea
4、ndleakageinflammationfoundinSARSpatients,andwascharacterizedbydiffusehemor-rhage,fibroidexudation,hyalinemembraneformation,andtypeIIpneumocyteshyperplasiainalveolarin-terstitia.Thepulmonaryepithelialnecrosis,excoriation,andearlyfibrosisofpulmonarytissuewereonlyob-se
5、rvedinReoV–SARS-CoVgroupsandinSARS-CoV/ReoVgroups.Othertypicalpathologicalchangesincludedhemorrhagicnecrosisinlymphnodesandspleenandhydropicdegenerationintheliver.Onthecon-trary,guineapigsinfectedwithSARS-CoVonlydevelopedinterstitialpneumonitis.Ourexperimentdemon-st
6、ratethatReoVmightbeoneoftheprimarycausesofSARS,sincesimultaneouscoinfectioncanduplicatethetypicalpathologicalchangessimilartothatofSARSpatients.Thisguineapigmodelmayprovideause-fulanimalmodelforSARS.INTRODUCTIONidentifytheroleofthenewlyisolatedReoV,guineapigswereino
