3、!54,429435).WecouldisolatesimilarbutnotidenticalvariantvirusafterinfectionofculturedneuralcellsfromratbrainwithwtJHMV(designatedCNSvirus),whichalsohadalargermRNA3andproducedlargerenvelopeE2glycoproteinininfectedcells.CNSvirusmultipliedtoahigherdegreeinculturedastr
4、ocytesfromratthanwtJHMVandcl-2.Duringinfectionwiththesevariantvirusesinneuralcells,viruspopulationsgenerateddidnotchange,incontrasttoconsistentselectionofviruseswithlargermRNA3afterwtJHMVinfections.CNSvirusproducedabundantmRNA2aaswellas65Kglycoproteinwhiletheprodu
5、ctionsofbothweretraceincl-2infectedcells.Thepresentexperiments,togetherwithourpreviousobservation,suggestthatthelargerE2glycoproteinmaybeofimportanceforthereplicationinratbraincells.01986AcademicPress.Inc.Mousehepatitisvirus(MHV)belongstovariantvirusselectedintheb
6、rain,~1-2,thecoronavirusfamily,whichisanenve-containedlargermRNA3andlargerE2lopedsinglestrandedRNAvirus(I,2).glycoproteinascomparedwiththoseoftheAmongmanystrainsofMHV,JHMVisoforiginalwtJHMV(7).Inprimarycultureparticularinterest,sincethisviruspro-ofneuralcellsfromr
7、ats,anothervariantducesachroniccentralnervoussystemviruswithlargermRNA3aswellaslarger(CNS)diseasebothinrats(8,4)andmiceE2glycoproteinwasselectivelypropa-(5).Itwasrecentlyshownthatlymphocytesgated.Thisreportdescribesthecompari-sensitizedbybasicproteinwerelargelyin-
