6、ratoryillnessesintheinfectedhost,althoughmoresystemicinfectionscanalsooccur.Beforetheoutbreakofsevereacuterespiratorysyndrome(SARS)in2002to2003,themajorityofcoronavirusesthathadbeenisolatedwererecoveredfromhumansanddomesticatedanimalspecies,includinglaboratoryrodents,an
7、dwereregardedprimarilyasveterinarypathogens.Therodentcoronaviruses,suchasthevariousstrainsofMHV,providedrodentmodelsforvarioushumandiseases.ThedemonstrationthattheagentthatcausedSARSwasanovelcoronavirus,andthesubsequentinvestigationsoftheoutbreakthatindicatedthattheSARS
