4、fferencesinthesemapssuggestthattranscriptionunitshavebeenlostorgainedduringcoronavirusdivergence.INTRODUCTIONFelineinfectiousperitonitis(FIP)isagenerallyfataldiseaseindomesticandwildFelidae(forreview,seePedersen,1983).Thecausativeagent,FIPvirus(FIPV),ha
5、sbeenidentifiedasacoronavirusonthebasisofmorphology(Ward,1970;Zooketal.,1968)andantigenicrelationshiptoothercoronaviruses,e.g.transmissiblegastroenteritisvirus(TGEV)ofswine,caninecoronavirusandhumancoronavirusE229(Horzineketal.,1982;Pedersenetal.,1978).
6、AlthoughthepathogenesisofFIPispoorlyunderstood,thereareindicationsthattheimmunesystemisinvolved(Horzinek&Osterhaus,1979).Transferredoractivelyacquiredanti-coronavirusantibodieshavebeenfoundtomakecatsmorepronetoafatalcourseofFIP(Pedersen&Boyle,1980;Weiss
7、&Scott,1981a,b).TheclinicalfeaturesofFIPsuggestanimmunecomplexdisease(Horzinek&Osterhaus,1979;Jacobse-Geelsetal.,1980,1982;Pedersen&Boyle,1980;Weiss&Scott,1981a,b).Ourpresentknowledgeofthemolecularbiologyofcoronavirusesprimarilystemsfromstudiesofmurineh
